ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Reserpine
Reserpine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Theanine interacts with.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with reserpine and L-theanine: reserpine already works to lower your blood pressure and calm the nervous system down. Theanine, the relaxing amino acid from tea, may nudge blood pressure a little lower too. Put them together and there's a chance the two add up, so your pressure could drop more than expected.
If that happens, you might notice dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling tired, or a slow heartbeat, especially when standing up quickly. I'll be honest, this concern comes mostly from animal studies, so it's more theoretical than proven, and a cup of regular tea is very different from a concentrated supplement. Still, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding theanine, and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Reserpine page
“Reserpine (Serpasil, Sandril) lowers blood pressure, and the 138 supplements and herbs listed here merit real vigilance, four of them rated major. Most pull in one of two directions: many common supplements lower pressure on their own and can add to reserpine's effect, dropping it too far, while a smaller group raises pressure and work…”

About Theanine
What is Theanine?
- Anxiety and stress
- Relaxation and calm
- Sleep support
- Focus and cognitive function
Theanine (usually L-theanine) is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves that many people take to feel calmer and less stressed without strong drowsiness. Early research suggests it may help with relaxation and stress, but evidence for most uses is still limited. It appears generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
About Reserpine
What Is Reserpine Used For?
Brand names: Serpasil, Sandril
-
Reserpine is used to treat high blood pressure. It also is used to treat severe agitation in patients with mental disorders. Reserpine is in a class of medications called rauwolfia alkaloids. It works by slowing the activity of the nervous system, causing the heartbeat to slow and the blood vessels to relax.
-
High blood pressure is a common condition and when not treated, can cause damage to the brain, heart, blood vessels, kidneys and other parts of the body. Damage to these organs may cause heart disease, a heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, loss of vision, and other problems. In addition to taking medication, making lifestyle changes will also help to control your blood pressure. These changes include eating a diet that is low in fat and salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising at least 30 minutes most days, not smoking, and using alcohol in moderation.

Reserpine Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Reserpine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Theanine — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
