Oxymorphone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Theanine interacts with.

Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.

Here's the quick picture: oxymorphone is a strong opioid pain reliever that already slows down your central nervous system, so it can make you sleepy, slow your breathing, and cloud your thinking. Theanine, the calming amino acid from tea, may gently nudge brain chemicals like GABA in a relaxing direction. Put them together and, in theory, you could feel a bit more drowsy or mellow than the oxymorphone alone would cause.

The good news is this concern is only theoretical and rated as minor and unlikely. There's no solid evidence it causes real problems, and ordinary tea amounts are very unlikely to matter. Still, since oxymorphone is a powerful opioid, I'd let your pharmacist or doctor know before adding a theanine supplement.

What Is Oxymorphone Used For?

Brand names: Numorphan, Opana, Opana ER, Opana Injection

Oxymorphone Hydrochloride Tablets (immediate-release) are used to treat acute pain severe enough to require an opioid when other pain treatments are not enough. Oxymorphone Hydrochloride Extended-Release Tablets are used to manage severe, persistent pain that needs to be treated with a daily opioid over an extended period and when other options are inadequate.

Both forms are reserved for situations where non-opioid medicines or other approaches have not worked well enough. Oxymorphone Hydrochloride Extended-Release Tablets are not meant to be taken on an as-needed basis — they are for ongoing, around-the-clock pain management only.
