Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.

Here's the gist: theanine, the calming amino acid from tea, may nudge your blood pressure down a bit on its own. Since aliskiren (Tekturna) is already working to relax your blood vessels and lower your pressure, taking the two together could add up and push your numbers lower than expected.

If that happens, you might notice things like dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling tired, or a brief woozy spell when you stand up quickly. I'll be honest though, this concern comes only from animal studies, so it's more theoretical than proven, and the small amount in a cup of tea is unlikely to be a problem. If you're using concentrated theanine supplements, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up and keep an eye on your blood pressure.

Aliskiren and Tekturna tablets are both approved to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and in children who are at least 6 years old and weigh 50 kg (about 110 lbs) or more. Lowering high blood pressure reduces the risk of serious events like strokes and heart attacks.

Managing blood pressure is usually part of a broader plan that may also include diet changes, exercise, cholesterol control, and other medications. Many people need more than one blood pressure drug to reach their goal.
