Aliskiren falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Activated Charcoal interacts with.

Activated charcoal reduces systemic exposure to many drugs, including those that undergo enterohepatic recirculation, regardless of the route of administration.
Activated charcoal adsorbs various drugs and may reduce their absorption and/or half-life. Examples of affected drugs include acetaminophen, aminophylline, amiodarone, atenolol, carbamazepine, dapsone, digoxin, disopyramide, fluoxetine, indomethacin, moxifloxacin, nadolol, phenytoin, phenobarbital, piroxicam, quinine, sotalol, theophylline, tricyclic antidepressants, valproate, and verapamil. Avoid co-administration, except after drug overdose.

Here's the simple version: activated charcoal acts like a sponge in your gut, grabbing onto medicine before your body can absorb it. If you take it close to your aliskiren (Tekturna), the charcoal can soak up a good chunk of that dose, so less of it gets into your bloodstream. The likely result is weaker blood pressure control, meaning your readings could creep back up.

Aliskiren isn't a prodrug, so this is straightforward: less drug absorbed means less effect, not more side effects. To stay safe, don't take charcoal at the same time as your blood pressure pill. Spacing them apart helps, but please check with your pharmacist or doctor on timing before mixing them, and don't change your aliskiren on your own.

What Is Aliskiren Used For?

Brand name: Tekturna

Aliskiren and Tekturna tablets are both approved to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and in children who are at least 6 years old and weigh 50 kg (about 110 lbs) or more. Lowering high blood pressure reduces the risk of serious events like strokes and heart attacks.

Managing blood pressure is usually part of a broader plan that may also include diet changes, exercise, cholesterol control, and other medications. Many people need more than one blood pressure drug to reach their goal.
