Cyclobenzaprine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Theanine interacts with.

Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.

Here's the short version: this is a very mild, mostly theoretical concern. Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) gently nudges serotonin in the body, and theanine might touch serotonin too, though the research goes both directions and isn't clear. On paper, stacking two things that may raise serotonin could add up, but in real life there are no reports of theanine actually triggering serotonin problems.

If anything, the more likely overlap is feeling extra relaxed or drowsy, since cyclobenzaprine already causes sleepiness and dry mouth and theanine is taken to feel calm. True serotonin syndrome (agitation, racing heart, sweating, tremor) is very unlikely here. Still, mention this combo to your pharmacist or doctor before starting, especially if you take other serotonin-affecting meds.

What Is Cyclobenzaprine Used For?

Brand names: Cyclobenzaprine, Flexeril, Cycloprine

Cyclobenzaprine tablets and extended-release capsules are used alongside rest and physical therapy to relieve muscle spasm caused by acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions — easing pain, tenderness, and limited movement. This use is intended for short-term treatment only (up to 2–3 weeks).

Tonmya, the sublingual (under-the-tongue) form of cyclobenzaprine, is separately indicated for the treatment of fibromyalgia in adults. It is not the same as the oral tablet or capsule formulations.
