Meprobamate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Theanine interacts with.

Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.

Here's the simple version: meprobamate already works by quieting down activity in your brain to ease anxiety, which is why it can leave you feeling sleepy or relaxed. Theanine, the calming amino acid found in tea, is thought to nudge those same calming brain signals (like GABA). So in theory, taking them together could add up to a little more drowsiness, grogginess, or that heavy, slowed-down feeling.

That said, this is a very mild, mostly theoretical concern. It's based on how these two work on paper, not on strong studies, and it's considered unlikely to cause real problems for most people. Still, since both can make you drowsy, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and go easy on driving until you know how you feel.

Because its effectiveness beyond four months has not been well studied, meprobamate is typically used for a limited period of time, with a prescriber checking in regularly to decide whether continued use is still appropriate.
