Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.

Here's the simple version: Quinapril already works to bring your blood pressure down, and theanine may nudge it a little lower too. Stacked together, they could in theory add up, so your pressure might dip more than expected. If that happens, you'd most likely notice things like lightheadedness, dizziness when you stand up quickly, tiredness, or feeling a bit washed out.

I want to be honest about how strong this evidence is, though. It comes from animal studies only, not solid human research, so this is more of a theoretical heads-up than a proven problem. Quinapril isn't a prodrug concern here, the issue is simply the two effects possibly overlapping. If you'd like to add theanine, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your readings at home.

What Is Quinapril Used For?

Brand names: Accupril, Accupro

Quinapril tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack. Quinapril may be used alone or combined with a thiazide diuretic (water pill) when one medication isn't enough.

Quinapril tablets are also used in the management of heart failure as an add-on therapy alongside other standard treatments such as diuretics and/or digitalis.
