Theanine + Alprazolam
Alprazolam brand names: Xanax, Niravam.
Theanine has a minor interaction with Alprazolam. Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Alprazolam
Alprazolam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Theanine interacts with.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the simple version: alprazolam (Xanax) already calms the brain by quieting overactive nerve signals, and theanine may nudge things in the same calming direction. Stacked together, the theory is that you could feel a little extra sleepiness, slower thinking, or that foggy, relaxed feeling Xanax can bring on its own.
I want to be honest about how soft this concern is. It's theoretical, based on how theanine works in the brain, not on strong human studies. A few people in one study felt drowsy on theanine alone. So this isn't a dangerous combo for most folks, but if you notice extra grogginess, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Alprazolam page
“Sedation stacking is the core danger with alprazolam (Xanax), a benzodiazepine for anxiety and panic, and this list deserves genuine care rather than a quick skim. Dozens of entries, alcohol chief among them, deepen its drowsiness and can slow breathing, while an even larger group changes how the body clears the drug through the CYP3A4…”

About Theanine
What is Theanine?
- Anxiety and stress
- Relaxation and calm
- Sleep support
- Focus and cognitive function
Theanine (usually L-theanine) is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves that many people take to feel calmer and less stressed without strong drowsiness. Early research suggests it may help with relaxation and stress, but evidence for most uses is still limited. It appears generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
About Alprazolam
What Is Alprazolam Used For?
Brand names: Xanax, Niravam
Alprazolam treats generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia, in adults. These uses are supported across multiple alprazolam products, including tablets, orally disintegrating tablets, oral solution, and extended-release tablets.
Xanax (tablet) is indicated for the acute treatment of GAD and for panic disorder. Xanax XR (extended-release tablet) and alprazolam extended-release tablets are indicated specifically for panic disorder with or without agoraphobia — not for GAD. Alprazolam orally disintegrating tablets and alprazolam oral solution are indicated for both GAD and panic disorder.
