Theanine and Amlodipine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Amlodipine

Amlodipine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Theanine interacts with.

Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: amlodipine already lowers your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels. Theanine, the calming compound from tea, may nudge blood pressure down a little too. So if you take both, the worry is that their effects could stack and push your numbers lower than intended.

If that happened, you might notice things like dizziness, lightheadedness when you stand up, headache, or feeling unusually tired. The good news is that this concern comes only from animal studies, not human research, so it's theoretical and likely mild for most people. Still, if you'd like to add theanine, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor, and keep an eye on your home blood pressure readings.

“Millions of people take amlodipine (Norvasc, Norliqva) for high blood pressure, and plenty add a supplement or two without a second thought. With this drug, that casualness costs.”

About Theanine

What is Theanine?

Theanine
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Relaxation and calm
  • Sleep support
  • Focus and cognitive function

Theanine (usually L-theanine) is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves that many people take to feel calmer and less stressed without strong drowsiness. Early research suggests it may help with relaxation and stress, but evidence for most uses is still limited. It appears generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
