Diazepam falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Theanine interacts with.

Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.

Here's the simple version: Valium (diazepam) already calms down activity in your brain, partly by boosting a chemical messenger called GABA. Theanine is thought to nudge GABA in a similar direction. So in theory, stacking the two could add up to a little more sedation than the diazepam alone, meaning more drowsiness, sleepiness, or feeling foggy and less coordinated.

That said, this is mostly a theory based on how each one works, not something proven to cause real problems. The concern is rated minor and unlikely, and in studies only some people felt mildly drowsy from theanine. Still, if you take diazepam, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding theanine, especially if you already feel sedated or plan to drive.

What Is Diazepam Used For?

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
