Topiramate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Theanine interacts with.

Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.

Here's the gist with theanine and Topamax. Topiramate can already make some folks feel foggy, sleepy, or slowed down in their thinking. Theanine is a calming amino acid from tea, and the theory is that it might nudge your brain's GABA activity a little, which could add to that mellow, drowsy feeling.

I want to be honest with you though: this is a theoretical concern based on how each works, not something proven to cause real problems. It's rated minor and unlikely. Topiramate isn't a prodrug, so theanine isn't changing how your body activates it. If you do try theanine, just notice whether you feel extra tired, dizzy, or unfocused, and loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

What Is Topiramate Used For?

Brand names: Topamax, Trokendi XR, Qudexy XR, Eprontia

  • Topiramate is used alone or with other medications to treat certain types of seizures including primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures (formerly known as a grand mal seizure; seizure that involves the entire body) and partial onset seizures (seizures that involve only one part of the brain). Topiramate is also used with other medications to control seizures in people who have Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (a disorder that causes seizures and developmental delays). Topiramate is also used to prevent migraine headaches but not to relieve the pain of migraine headaches when they occur. Topiramate is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. It works by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain.
