SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Duloxetine
Duloxetine falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS — the group Theanine interacts with.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the short version on combining L-theanine (the calming amino acid in tea) with your duloxetine: this pairing is considered a very minor concern. Duloxetine already nudges up serotonin in the brain, and the worry on paper is that theanine might add to that. But the truth is the research is all over the map. Some studies say theanine raises serotonin, others say it lowers it, and importantly, there are no real-world reports of theanine triggering serotonin-related problems.
So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Just be aware of how you feel, and if you ever notice things like jitteriness, a racing heart, sweating, agitation, or shakiness, check in with your pharmacist or doctor. Don't change your duloxetine on your own, and it's always smart to mention any new supplement before you start it.

About Theanine
What is Theanine?
- Anxiety and stress
- Relaxation and calm
- Sleep support
- Focus and cognitive function
Theanine (usually L-theanine) is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves that many people take to feel calmer and less stressed without strong drowsiness. Early research suggests it may help with relaxation and stress, but evidence for most uses is still limited. It appears generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.

Duloxetine Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Duloxetine as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Theanine — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
