Theanine + Buprenorphine
Buprenorphine brand names: Subutex, Butrans, Sublocade, Brixadi.
Buprenorphine falls into 2 drug categories that Theanine can interact with; the most serious is rated minor. Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Theanine interacts with whole categories of medication. Buprenorphine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Theanine in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Buprenorphine
Buprenorphine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Theanine interacts with.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the gist for buprenorphine (Subutex, Sublocade, and the like) paired with theanine. Buprenorphine on its own can make you feel drowsy, mellow, or a little foggy. Theanine is a calming amino acid from tea, and in theory it may nudge your brain's calming signals (like GABA) a bit higher. Put the two together and you could, in theory, feel slightly more relaxed or sleepy than usual.
I want to be honest about how soft this concern is. It's theoretical, based on how these things work rather than real-world reports, and any added effect is expected to be mild. Still, if you notice extra drowsiness, just mention it to your pharmacist or prescriber before changing anything.

SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
2 of 2Buprenorphine also falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the honest picture on combining theanine with your buprenorphine. Theanine is the calming amino acid from tea, and it may gently nudge brain chemicals like serotonin. Buprenorphine, on the other hand, has its own mild serotonin activity. The theory here is that two things touching serotonin could add up. In reality, the evidence is weak and conflicting, some studies say theanine raises serotonin and others say it lowers it, and nobody has actually reported problems from this pairing.
So I'd file this as very low concern, not something to lose sleep over. If you ever noticed unusual agitation, sweating, a racing heart, shakiness, or confusion, that's worth a call. Since buprenorphine is part of your treatment program, just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding theanine.
What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Buprenorphine page
“Buprenorphine (Subutex, Butrans, Sublocade, Brixadi) is an opioid, and slowed breathing is the harm that matters most with it, so I read this particular list warily. Over a third of the ingredients on it are sedating in their own right, alcohol chief among them, and stacking sedatives on an opioid deepens drowsiness and can suppress br…”

About Theanine
What is Theanine?
- Anxiety and stress
- Relaxation and calm
- Sleep support
- Focus and cognitive function
Theanine (usually L-theanine) is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves that many people take to feel calmer and less stressed without strong drowsiness. Early research suggests it may help with relaxation and stress, but evidence for most uses is still limited. It appears generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
