Theanine + Metoclopramide
Metoclopramide brand names: Reglan, Metoclopramide Injection, Octamide.
Metoclopramide falls into 2 drug categories that Theanine can interact with; the most serious is rated minor. Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Theanine interacts with whole categories of medication. Metoclopramide falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Theanine in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Metoclopramide
Metoclopramide falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Theanine interacts with.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the gist with metoclopramide (Reglan) and theanine. Metoclopramide can already make some people feel drowsy or tired, since it acts on the brain in addition to speeding up your stomach. Theanine, the calming amino acid from tea, may gently nudge brain chemicals like GABA toward relaxation. Put them together and, in theory, you could feel a little sleepier or more mellow than usual.
I'll be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on how each one works, not something we see causing real problems often. It's rated minor and unlikely. Still, if you notice extra drowsiness, take it easy with driving until you know how you feel, and run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

SEROTONERGIC DRUGS
2 of 2Metoclopramide also falls under SEROTONERGIC DRUGS.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the short version: this is a very mild, mostly theoretical concern. Theanine may nudge serotonin levels in the brain, and metoclopramide (Reglan) also touches the serotonin system, so on paper combining them could add up. In practice, though, theanine has not actually been linked to serotonin-related problems, and the studies even disagree on whether it raises or lowers serotonin at all.
If both were stacked together, the thing to watch for would be the kind of effects metoclopramide can already cause, like restlessness, agitation, muscle twitching, or feeling jittery. That's unlikely with theanine in the picture. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since metoclopramide has its own neurological cautions, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor before starting theanine.
What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
- AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
- BCase-control study.
- CConsensus.
- DAnecdotal evidence.

About Theanine
What is Theanine?
- Anxiety and stress
- Relaxation and calm
- Sleep support
- Focus and cognitive function
Theanine (usually L-theanine) is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves that many people take to feel calmer and less stressed without strong drowsiness. Early research suggests it may help with relaxation and stress, but evidence for most uses is still limited. It appears generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
About Metoclopramide
What Is Metoclopramide Used For?
Brand names: Reglan, Metoclopramide Injection, Octamide
Metoclopramide tablets are used in adults for two main conditions. First, they treat symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux (GERD — when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus) in people who haven't gotten relief from standard treatments. Second, they ease symptoms of diabetic gastroparesis, a condition where nerve damage from diabetes causes the stomach to empty too slowly.
Treatment is meant to be short-term. For acid reflux, it's used for 4 to 12 weeks. For diabetic gastroparesis, it's generally used for 2 to 8 weeks. It is not recommended for children due to serious safety concerns.
