Theanine + Hydromorphone
Hydromorphone brand names: Dilaudid, Hydromorph Contin, Palladone.
Theanine has a minor interaction with Hydromorphone. Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Hydromorphone
Hydromorphone falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Theanine interacts with.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the gist: hydromorphone (Dilaudid) is a strong opioid that already calms the brain and can make you sleepy. Theanine, the relaxing amino acid from tea, may gently nudge the same calming brain chemicals like GABA. Put them together and the worry is simply that the drowsiness could add up a little.
Honestly, this one is mostly theoretical. It's based on how each works on paper, not on solid studies, and it's rated minor and unlikely. Still, with a powerful pain medicine like hydromorphone, I'd rather you watch for extra sleepiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy. If you notice that, or you're combining other sedating things, loop in your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

These are real questions from readers, answered by the pharmacists at HelloPharmacist — written by a person, not generated from a database. From our pharmacist’s overview on the Hydromorphone page
“Hydromorphone (Dilaudid, Palladone) is a potent opioid, and the risk that matters most with any opioid is slowed breathing. Most of this list pushes in exactly that direction.”

About Theanine
What is Theanine?
- Anxiety and stress
- Relaxation and calm
- Sleep support
- Focus and cognitive function
Theanine (usually L-theanine) is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves that many people take to feel calmer and less stressed without strong drowsiness. Early research suggests it may help with relaxation and stress, but evidence for most uses is still limited. It appears generally well tolerated for short-term use, but check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
About Hydromorphone
What Is Hydromorphone Used For?
Brand names: Dilaudid, Hydromorph Contin, Palladone
Hydromorphone is used to manage pain severe enough to require an opioid analgesic — when non-opioid medicines or other options have not worked or are not expected to work well enough. It is available in several forms: oral tablets, oral solution, rectal suppositories, and injectable formulations given into a vein, muscle, or under the skin.
Hydromorphone hydrochloride extended-release tablets are specifically for severe, persistent pain that requires around-the-clock opioid treatment for an extended period, and are only for opioid-tolerant patients — they are not for as-needed use. The high-potency injectable formulation is also reserved for opioid-tolerant patients who need higher opioid doses.
