Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.

Here's the gist: metolazone is a water pill that lowers blood pressure by helping your body get rid of extra salt and fluid. Theanine, the calming amino acid in tea, may nudge your blood pressure down a little on its own. Put the two together and there's a theoretical chance your pressure could dip lower than expected.

If that happened, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, or wobbly when you stand up too quickly. I want to be honest though: this concern comes only from animal studies, not from people, so it's far from proven. The small amount of theanine in a cup of tea is unlikely to matter. If you take a concentrated theanine supplement, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up and keep an eye on how you feel.

What Is Metolazone Used For?

Brand names: Diulo, Zaroxolyn, Mykrox

Metolazone tablets are used to treat edema (excess fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure or kidney diseases — including nephrotic syndrome and conditions with reduced kidney function. They are also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), either alone or alongside other blood pressure medications.

Metolazone tablets may also be used during pregnancy when edema is caused by a medical condition rather than normal pregnancy changes — but routine use in otherwise healthy pregnant women is not appropriate.
