Chlorthalidone is a water pill that lowers your blood pressure by helping your body shed extra salt and fluid. Theanine, the calming compound from tea, may gently nudge blood pressure down too. So if you pair them, there's a chance the two could add up and push your numbers a little lower than expected.

If that happened, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, or wobbly when standing up quickly. Here's the reassuring part: this concern comes only from animal studies, so it's theoretical and far from proven. The amount in a cup of tea is very unlikely to matter. If you take a concentrated theanine supplement, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on your blood pressure readings.

What Is Chlorthalidone Used For?

Brand names: Hygroton, Thalitone

Chlorthalidone is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Chlorthalidone is also used as an add-on treatment for edema (fluid buildup) caused by heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. Thalitone is additionally indicated for edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease including nephrotic syndrome.
