Here's the simple version. Chlorthalidone is a water pill that already works to lower your blood pressure by helping your body shed extra salt and water. American Hellebore is a different beast entirely. It's a genuinely poisonous plant whose alkaloids slow the heart rate and drop blood pressure on their own, even in tiny amounts.

Stack those two together and the effects pile up. You could see your pressure fall too far or your pulse slow down, which can leave you dizzy, lightheaded, weak, or even fainting. Because the hellebore itself can be toxic to the heart, this combination is a serious one. I'd steer clear of any hellebore product and talk with your doctor or pharmacist first if you're ever tempted to try it.

What Is Chlorthalidone Used For?

Brand names: Hygroton, Thalitone

Chlorthalidone is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Chlorthalidone is also used as an add-on treatment for edema (fluid buildup) caused by heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. Thalitone is additionally indicated for edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease including nephrotic syndrome.
