Bitter Orange + Selegiline
Selegiline brand names: Carbex, Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar.
Bitter Orange has a major interaction with Selegiline. Theoretically, taking MAOIs with synephrine-containing bitter orange preparations might increase the hypertensive effects of synephrine, potentially leading to hypertensive crisis.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs)
Why this applies to Selegiline
Selegiline falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Bitter Orange interacts with.
Bitter orange contains tyramine, octopamine, and synephrine, which are MAO substrates.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the concern with pairing bitter orange and selegiline. Selegiline is an MAO-B inhibitor, and one of MAO's jobs is to break down stimulant-like compounds in your body. Bitter orange supplements are loaded with synephrine, plus tyramine and octopamine, all of which MAO normally clears out. When that breakdown is slowed, these compounds can pile up and push your blood pressure up sharply.
In theory, that combination could trigger a dangerous spike in blood pressure (a hypertensive crisis), with symptoms like a pounding headache, chest pain, racing heart, or sweating. I'll be honest that this is based mostly on how the chemistry works rather than lots of human reports, but because the worst-case is serious, it's worth real caution. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using any bitter orange product while on selegiline.

About Bitter Orange
What is Bitter Orange?
- Weight loss
- Athletic performance and energy
- Digestive upset
- Appetite control
- Aromatherapy for stress (neroli oil)
Bitter orange is a citrus fruit whose extracts contain synephrine, a mild stimulant often added to weight-loss and energy supplements. Evidence that it works for weight loss or performance is limited, and because it can raise heart rate and blood pressure, people with heart problems, high blood pressure, or who are pregnant should avoid it. Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you take other stimulants.
About Selegiline
What Is Selegiline Used For?
Brand names: Carbex, Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar
Selegiline is used for two different conditions, depending on the product.
- Selegiline hydrochloride tablets and capsules, and Zelapar (orally disintegrating tablet), are add-on treatments for Parkinson’s disease in people taking levodopa/carbidopa whose response to it has gotten worse.
- Emsam (skin patch) treats major depressive disorder in adults.
For Parkinson’s disease, there is no evidence from controlled studies that selegiline helps without levodopa.

Selegiline Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Selegiline as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Bitter Orange — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
