Why this applies to Tranylcypromine
Tranylcypromine falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Bitter Orange interacts with.
Bitter orange contains tyramine, octopamine, and synephrine, which are MAO substrates.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the big concern with this pairing. Tranylcypromine (Parnate) is an MAO inhibitor, which means it blocks the very enzyme your body uses to break down stimulant-like compounds. Bitter orange supplements are loaded with synephrine, tyramine, and octopamine, all of which normally get cleared by that same enzyme. When you block their breakdown with an MAOI, these compounds can pile up and shove your blood pressure dangerously high.
This raises the real risk of a hypertensive crisis: a sudden severe headache, pounding heart, sweating, neck stiffness, or chest pain. That's a medical emergency. While this specific warning is graded on lab-based evidence rather than human studies, MAOIs are well known for serious reactions with stimulants and tyramine. Please don't combine these without first checking with your doctor or pharmacist.

Tranylcypromine tablets — sold as Parnate, Tranylcypromine, and Tranylcypromine Sulfate — are used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. It is not a first-choice antidepressant; it is specifically for people who have already tried other antidepressants and have not gotten adequate relief.
Because of its serious potential side effects, strict dietary requirements, and many drug interactions, tranylcypromine is reserved for cases where other treatments have not worked. It is not approved for use in children.
