What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chlorella, 500 mg per tablet. The product facts we hold do not describe its role in detail beyond the uses covered in the effectiveness section below.
Food Glaze is also listed as an inactive ingredient in this product.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
Chlorella is rated possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency. For athletic performance, brain tumors, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and exercise-induced respiratory infections, there is insufficient reliable evidence to rate it.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated short term, but product quality and purity vary widely. The most common side effects include allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, photosensitivity, and stool discoloration.
Serious reactions, including anaphylaxis, are rare, and allergic reactions including asthma have been reported in people taking chlorella and in those preparing chlorella tablets. One safety note says there is not enough safety data on chlorella, so it advises avoiding it unless your doctor directs otherwise.
In pregnancy, chlorella is rated possibly safe. We do not have a lactation rating on file for it, so there is no breastfeeding guidance we can give.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Double-check warfarin (a blood thinner) before taking this product, since the interaction is rated Moderate. Also double-check photosensitizing drugs, which are also rated Moderate.
Our data documents no other medication types for chlorella, but ask your own doctor or pharmacist before combining it with any prescription.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella may be worth discussing with your doctor if you are considering it for pregnancy-related iron deficiency, since that is its only rating above insufficient evidence. If you take warfarin or any photosensitizing medication, or you burn easily in the sun, be extra careful.
Talk it over with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting.
