Full

Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: chlorella, a freshwater algae, at 500 mg per tablet. Chlorella is a whole-food supplement with naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, and other plant compounds.

The tablet also contains food glaze as an inactive ingredient to help with form and storage.

Does it work?

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: general nutrition and nutrient support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Pregnancy-related iron deficiency, immune support, detoxification, antioxidant support.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Chlorella is rated "Possibly Effective" for Pregnancy-related iron deficiency (Natural Medicines).

Chlorella is possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency — there is some clinical support for this use. For brain tumors, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), depression, and fatigue, the evidence isn't established in the data we hold.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work for these purposes; it means we don't yet have reliable evidence to rate whether it does.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chlorella is generally well tolerated in the short term. The most common side effects are mild: allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, sun sensitivity, and changes in stool color — especially during the first two weeks.

Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, are rare but have been reported. One important caveat: product quality and purity vary widely, so source matters.

For pregnancy, the safety data suggests it's possibly safe, but the data is limited. For breastfeeding, there isn't enough information on file to know either way — talk with your pharmacist or doctor before use while nursing.

Moderate interaction found

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Chlorella.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 337 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check before taking if you're on warfarin (Coumadin) or any other blood thinner — chlorella could make it less effective. Also double-check any photosensitizing drugs (medications your doctor said make you sun-sensitive), since chlorella can add to that effect.

Use the search tool on this page to verify your exact medications.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Chlorella might be worth considering if you have pregnancy-related iron deficiency or are curious about whole-food nutrition — and if you don't take warfarin or photosensitizing medications. Anyone on a blood thinner or a drug that increases sun sensitivity needs to check with their pharmacist first.

If you have a history of food or algae allergies, be cautious and start slow.

Chlorella 500 mg by NutriBiotic Super Greens: Common Questions

Does Chlorella 500 mg by NutriBiotic Super Greens interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Chlorella 500 mg has a known interaction with 337 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Chlorella 500 mg contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take chlorella if I'm pregnant?
The safety data suggests it's possibly safe during pregnancy, but the information is limited. Since you're pregnant, talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice before starting — that's the safest move.
What are the most common side effects?
Most people tolerate it well, but some experience mild stomach upset, gas, nausea, or loose stools — especially in the first couple of weeks. A small number of people have had allergic reactions or sun sensitivity. Serious reactions are rare.
Does it really help with iron deficiency in pregnancy?
There's some clinical evidence that chlorella is possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency. If you're pregnant and concerned about iron, though, talk with your OB or midwife — they may recommend iron supplements instead or along with it.
Why does it say product quality varies widely?
Chlorella comes from different manufacturers and sources, and how it's grown, harvested, and processed affects purity and potency. The quality control can be inconsistent across brands, so picking a reputable maker matters.
I'm on a blood thinner. Can I take this?
Not without checking with your pharmacist first. Chlorella is high in vitamin K, which can interfere with how blood thinners like warfarin work. Your doctor or pharmacist needs to evaluate your specific situation before you start.
