Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.

Here's the simple version: acitretin (Soriatane) already makes your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you can sunburn faster and more severely than usual. Chlorella has been linked, in a handful of case reports, to its own kind of sun sensitivity, with swelling and reddish-purple spots showing up on sun-exposed skin. Put the two together and the worry is that they could add up, making your skin even quicker to react in the sun.

This is a theoretical concern based on how each one behaves, not something proven to happen with this combo, so don't panic. Still, it's worth playing it safe with sunscreen, hats, and covering up. If you'd like to use chlorella, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Acitretin Used For?

Brand name: Soriatane

Acitretin capsules are approved to treat severe psoriasis in adults. It is typically reserved for patients whose psoriasis has not responded to other treatments, or when other treatments are not appropriate options.

Because of serious risks — including the risk of severe birth defects — acitretin is not a first-line choice. In women who could become pregnant, it should only be used when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks and strict pregnancy-prevention measures are in place.
