Amiodarone falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Chlorella interacts with.

Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.

Here's the connection worth knowing about. Amiodarone is well known for making your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so people taking it can sunburn faster or even develop a bluish-gray skin tint with long-term use. Chlorella has its own reputation here too. In a handful of case reports, people taking it developed swelling and reddish-purple spots on sun-exposed skin.

So this isn't about chlorella changing how your body handles amiodarone. It's that both can boost sun sensitivity, and stacking them could theoretically make a sunburn-type reaction more likely. To be fair, this is based on pharmacology and a few reports, not strong proof. Either way, protect yourself with sunscreen and covering up, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding chlorella.

What Is Amiodarone Used For?

Amiodarone is prescribed for adults with serious, life-threatening heart-rhythm problems that haven't responded to other medications. Specifically, it's used for two dangerous arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats): recurrent ventricular fibrillation (a chaotic, potentially fatal heart rhythm) and recurrent ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm that causes unstable blood pressure).

Because amiodarone comes with significant risks, doctors reserve it for situations where other options haven't worked or can't be tolerated. It is not a first-choice medication — it's a last-resort tool for serious, life-threatening conditions.
