Isotretinoin falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Chlorella interacts with.

Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.

Here's the thing about isotretinoin: it already makes your skin much more sensitive to the sun. Sunburns can come on faster and feel worse than you'd expect while you're on it. Chlorella has been linked, in a handful of case reports, to its own kind of sun reaction (swelling and reddish-purple spots on sun-exposed skin). So stacking the two together could, in theory, add up to more sun sensitivity.

I want to be straight with you, though: this is a theoretical concern based on how each one behaves, not something we see proven in studies. Isotretinoin isn't a prodrug, so chlorella isn't changing how it works in your body. If you take both, just be extra careful with sunscreen and covering up, and run it by your dermatologist or pharmacist.

Chlorella is a nutrient-rich freshwater green algae taken as a supplement for general wellness, immune support, and 'detox.' Some small studies suggest possible benefits for cholesterol, blood pressure, and immune markers, but the overall evidence is limited and not strong. It is generally well tolerated, but quality varies and it should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless a doctor approves.

What Is Isotretinoin Used For?

Brand names: Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, Sotret, Absorica, Roaccutane

Isotretinoin capsules — sold under brand names including Absorica, Absorica LD, Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, and others — are used to treat severe recalcitrant nodular acne (deep, inflamed acne nodules 5 mm or larger) in non-pregnant patients 12 years of age and older whose acne has not responded to conventional treatments, including systemic antibiotics.

This medication is reserved for serious cases — those with many nodules, not just a few. A single 15- to 20-week course has been shown to produce complete and prolonged clearing in many patients. If a second course is ever needed, it should not be started until at least two months after finishing the first, because acne may continue to improve even after stopping.
