Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.

Here's the thing to know about pairing chlorella with captopril: this isn't about how your blood pressure medicine is broken down or how strong it gets. Captopril, like some other blood pressure drugs, can occasionally make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Chlorella has been linked, in just a handful of case reports, to a similar reaction (swelling and reddish-purple spots on sun-exposed skin).

So the worry is simply that the two together might stack up and make you sunburn or react more easily in the sun. I'll be honest, this is theoretical and based on weak evidence, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Just use sunscreen and watch for any unusual skin rash. If you notice something, check in with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Chlorella is a nutrient-rich freshwater green algae taken as a supplement for general wellness, immune support, and 'detox.' What Is Captopril Used For?

Brand names: Capoten, Acepril

Captopril tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and left ventricular dysfunction (weakened pumping function of the heart) in stable patients after a heart attack. For the heart attack indication, it helps improve survival and reduces the chance of developing full heart failure.

Captopril tablets are also used to slow the progression of diabetic nephropathy (kidney damage caused by diabetes) in people with type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes who have retinopathy and significant protein in their urine. It reduces the risk of the kidneys failing to the point of needing dialysis or a transplant.
