Nifedipine falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Chlorella interacts with.

Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.

Here's the thing to know about pairing chlorella with nifedipine: this isn't about chlorella changing how your body breaks down the drug or how well it controls your blood pressure or chest pain. Instead, both can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Nifedipine itself can occasionally cause sun sensitivity, and there are a handful of case reports where chlorella triggered swelling and reddish-purple rashes on sun-exposed skin. Put them together and, in theory, you might sunburn or react more easily.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how these work, not something proven to happen often. Still, it's easy to play it safe: use sunscreen, cover up outdoors, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding chlorella.

What Is Nifedipine Used For?

Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR

Nifedipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic stable angina (chest pain brought on by physical effort), and vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by spasm of the coronary arteries, sometimes called Prinzmetal's angina). Lowering blood pressure with nifedipine helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

The capsule form is approved for vasospastic angina and chronic stable angina only — it is not approved for high blood pressure. The extended-release tablet (including Procardia) covers all three uses: vasospastic angina, chronic stable angina, and high blood pressure.
