Here's the gist for Acitretin (Soriatane): this medication can already make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you sunburn faster and more easily than usual. Alfalfa may add to that. Animal studies hint that large amounts of alfalfa (likely from its chlorophyll content) can also bump up sun sensitivity, so stacking the two together could theoretically leave your skin extra vulnerable to burning.

I want to be straight with you, though: this is a theoretical concern based on pharmacology and animal data, not proven in people. The bigger sun-sensitivity comes from the acitretin itself. Either way, good sun protection (sunscreen, hats, covering up) is smart while on this drug. Before adding an alfalfa supplement, just run it past your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Acitretin Used For?

Acitretin capsules are approved to treat severe psoriasis in adults. It is typically reserved for patients whose psoriasis has not responded to other treatments, or when other treatments are not appropriate options.

Because of serious risks — including the risk of severe birth defects — acitretin is not a first-line choice. In women who could become pregnant, it should only be used when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks and strict pregnancy-prevention measures are in place.
