Alfalfa and Insulin (rDNA)

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin (rDNA)

Insulin (rDNA) falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Alfalfa interacts with.

Theoretically, alfalfa might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that alfalfa decreases blood sugar in diabetic mice. Also, in one case report, a diabetic patient experienced hypoglycemia after consuming alfalfa extract. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with alfalfa and your insulin (like Humalog or Humulin). Insulin already lowers your blood sugar, and alfalfa may nudge it down a little further. If both are working at once, your blood sugar could dip lower than you expect. That can show up as shakiness, sweating, a racing heart, confusion, or feeling lightheaded.

I want to be honest about how strong this evidence is: it's mostly from diabetic mice plus a single human case report, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven one. Still, since you're on insulin, it's worth being a bit cautious. If you do try alfalfa, check your blood sugar more often at first, and talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it so they can help you watch for lows.
