Alectinib Hydrochloride falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Chlorella interacts with.

Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.

Here's something worth knowing if you take alectinib (Alecensa) for lung cancer. This medication can already make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so it's easier to get a sunburn or develop a rash on sun-exposed areas. Chlorella has been reported, in a small handful of cases, to do the same thing. Put the two together and there's a chance, at least in theory, that you could burn or react more easily in the sun.

To be honest, this is based on pharmacology and a few case reports, not strong studies, so it's far from certain. Still, with a cancer therapy like alectinib I'd play it safe. Use sunscreen, cover up outdoors, and check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding chlorella.

What Is Alectinib Used For?

Brand name: Alecensa

Alecensa (alectinib) is used in adults with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors test positive for a gene change called ALK (anaplastic lymphoma kinase). Your tumor must be confirmed ALK-positive by an FDA-approved test before starting treatment.

Alecensa is approved for two situations: as adjuvant treatment (after surgery to remove the tumor, for tumors that are large enough or have spread to nearby lymph nodes) to help prevent the cancer from coming back, and for metastatic NSCLC (cancer that has already spread to other areas of the body).
