Alectinib Hydrochloride falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Siberian Cocklebur interacts with.

Siberian cocklebur can adversely affect the liver. It has been linked to many cases of hepatotoxicity and some cases of liver failure. Theoretically, concomitant use with other potentially hepatotoxic drugs might increase the risk of developing liver damage. Some of these drugs include acarbose (Precose, Prandase), amiodarone (Cordarone), atorvastatin (Lipitor), azathioprine (Imuran), carbamazepine (Tegretol), cerivastatin (Baycol), diclofenac (Voltaren), felbamate (Felbatol), fenofibrate (TriCor), fluvastatin (Lescol), gemfibrozil (Lopid), isoniazid, itraconazole, (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), leflunomide (Arava), lovastatin (Mevacor), methotrexate (Rheumatrex), nevirapine (Viramune), niacin, nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin), pioglitazone (Actos), pravastatin (Pravachol), pyrazinamide, rifampin (Rifadin), ritonavir (Norvir), rosiglitazone (Avandia), simvastatin (Zocor), tacrine (Cognex), tamoxifen, terbinafine (Lamisil), valproic acid, and zileuton (Zyflo).

Here's the concern with pairing Siberian cocklebur and alectinib (Alecensa). This isn't about one speeding up or slowing down the other. Instead, both can be hard on your liver. Siberian cocklebur has been tied to real cases of liver injury and even liver failure, and alectinib itself can raise liver enzymes and cause liver problems as a known side effect. Stacking two liver stressors together may add up.

If your liver gets irritated, you might notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain on the right side, nausea, or unusual tiredness. Your cancer team already checks your liver labs on alectinib, so please loop in your oncologist or pharmacist before adding this herb. Don't change your alectinib on your own.

What Is Alectinib Used For?

Brand name: Alecensa

Alecensa (alectinib) is used in adults with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors have a specific genetic change called ALK-positive (anaplastic lymphoma kinase-positive), confirmed by an FDA-approved test.

Alecensa is used in two situations: as adjuvant treatment — meaning after surgical removal of the tumor — in patients whose tumors were at least 4 cm or had spread to nearby lymph nodes; and as treatment for metastatic NSCLC, meaning cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
