Amiloride, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Chlorella interacts with.

Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.

Here's the simple version. The hydrochlorothiazide part of your water pill can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you may sunburn faster or break out in a rash on areas the sun hits. Chlorella has also been reported, in a handful of cases, to trigger sun-related skin reactions like swelling and reddish-purple spots. Put the two together and, at least in theory, you could be a little more prone to those skin reactions.

I want to be honest: this is a theoretical concern based on how each one behaves, not on strong studies, so don't panic. Chlorella doesn't change how your blood pressure medicine works. Just use good sun protection, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting chlorella.

Chlorella is a nutrient-rich freshwater green algae taken as a supplement for general wellness, immune support, and 'detox.' Some small studies suggest possible benefits for cholesterol, blood pressure, and immune markers, but the overall evidence is limited and not strong. What Is Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Moduretic, Amilzide, Moduret 25, Amil-Co

Amiloride hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure who tend to develop low potassium (hypokalemia) when taking a thiazide or other diuretic alone — or for whom keeping potassium levels in a normal range is especially important, such as people taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems.

The tablets may be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medicines, such as methyldopa or beta blockers. This combination product is not intended as the first-choice treatment for swelling (edema) or high blood pressure unless low potassium is a specific concern.
