HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chlorella 500 mg by NutriBiotic Super Greens
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chlorella, a freshwater algae, at 500 mg per tablet. Chlorella is a whole-food supplement with naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, and other plant compounds.
The tablet also contains food glaze as an inactive ingredient to help with form and storage.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Chlorella is possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency — there is some clinical support for this use. For brain tumors, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), depression, and fatigue, the evidence isn't established in the data we hold.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work for these purposes; it means we don't yet have reliable evidence to rate whether it does.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated in the short term. The most common side effects are mild: allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, sun sensitivity, and changes in stool color — especially during the first two weeks.
Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, are rare but have been reported. One important caveat: product quality and purity vary widely, so source matters.
For pregnancy, the safety data suggests it's possibly safe, but the data is limited. For breastfeeding, there isn't enough information on file to know either way — talk with your pharmacist or doctor before use while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check before taking if you're on warfarin (Coumadin) or any other blood thinner — chlorella could make it less effective. Also double-check any photosensitizing drugs (medications your doctor said make you sun-sensitive), since chlorella can add to that effect.
Use the search tool on this page to verify your exact medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella might be worth considering if you have pregnancy-related iron deficiency or are curious about whole-food nutrition — and if you don't take warfarin or photosensitizing medications. Anyone on a blood thinner or a drug that increases sun sensitivity needs to check with their pharmacist first.
If you have a history of food or algae allergies, be cautious and start slow.

Chlorella 500 mg by NutriBiotic Super Greens Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chlorella 500 mg by NutriBiotic Super Greens does interact with medications in two important ways.
The most serious concern is photosensitizing drugs — medications that make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Chlorella itself can cause photosensitivity, and taken together with these drugs, the effect could compound.
You'd be at higher risk for sun-induced skin reactions even with brief outdoor exposure.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The second interaction involves warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner. Chlorella is high in vitamin K, which counteracts how warfarin works.
There's at least one documented case where someone's warfarin stopped working properly after they started chlorella. This could put you at real risk if your dose isn't adjusted.
Altogether, these interactions span 337 individual medications. Use the search tool below to check your exact prescriptions before you start chlorella, especially if you take a blood thinner or any drug your doctor says makes you sun-sensitive.

Chlorella
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
