What’s inside
Full disclosure
Chlorella (Broken Cell) is a single-ingredient supplement — a freshwater algae that's been broken open to improve absorption. There are no inactive ingredients listed in this formulation.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Chlorella has possibly effective evidence for pregnancy-related iron deficiency. For brain tumor, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), depression, and fatigue, the evidence is too limited or unreliable to rate.
The data we hold doesn't establish effectiveness for most of the uses it's promoted for.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated in the short term, though product quality and purity vary widely — that matters when you're buying from different suppliers. Common side effects include allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, photosensitivity, and stool discoloration.
Most digestive upset happens in the first two weeks. Serious allergic reactions including anaphylaxis are rare but have been reported.
For pregnancy, chlorella is rated possibly safe — meaning there's some data suggesting it may be okay, but it's not definitive. Safety during breastfeeding is not established in our data, so there isn't enough information to know either way.
If you're pregnant or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether chlorella is right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this if you use warfarin (Coumadin) — chlorella's vitamin K content can reduce how well warfarin works. Also clear it first if you take any photosensitizing drugs (medications that increase your skin's sensitivity to sun), since chlorella may add to that effect.
Run your exact medications through the interaction checker on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella might be worth considering if you're dealing with pregnancy-related iron deficiency and your doctor or pharmacist thinks it's appropriate. Skip it or get personal approval from your healthcare provider if you take warfarin or any photosensitizing medication.
Since product quality varies widely and long-term safety data is limited, check with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Chlorella monograph & interactionsChlorella (Broken Cell) by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chlorella by BulkSupplements.com does interact with medications.
The most serious concern is with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner — chlorella contains significant vitamin K, which can reduce warfarin's blood-thinning effect and make clot prevention less reliable. There's at least one case report of this happening after someone started chlorella supplements.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Chlorella may also have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs (medications that increase sun sensitivity). Chlorella itself has been reported to cause photosensitization — in five case reports, people who took chlorella developed swelling and reddish-purple lesions on sun-exposed skin.
Taking it alongside photosensitizing medications could theoretically increase this risk.
Altogether, these interactions span 337 individual medications. Use the interaction checker below to search your exact prescriptions before starting this product.
