HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chlorella by Hawaii Pharm
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chlorella entire plant extract in dried form. Chlorella is a type of algae — the whole plant is used.
The liquid also includes alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients to deliver the chlorella extract.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for chlorella is mixed. It's considered possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency.
For other uses — brain tumor, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, depression, and fatigue — the data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate whether it actually works. If you're considering it for a specific condition, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the science supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated in the short term, but product quality and purity vary widely between brands — that's worth knowing. The most common side effects are allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, photosensitivity, and stool discoloration.
Digestive upset tends to happen in the first two weeks. Rare serious reactions like anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) have been reported.
Because long-term safety data is limited, the safety data advises against using this product unless your doctor approves.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check if you're on warfarin (Coumadin) or any blood thinners — chlorella may reduce their effectiveness. Also flag any medications that make you photosensitive (sun-sensitive).
Use the medication search tool on this page to verify your exact drugs.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella may be worth considering if you're pregnant with iron deficiency and your doctor recommends it. Anyone taking warfarin or photosensitizing medications should check with their pharmacist first — the interactions are documented.
Start low if you do use it, watch for digestive upset early on, and stick with reputable brands since quality varies. Talk to your pharmacist before you start.

Chlorella Entire Plant Extract, Dry
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, chlorella might have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs.
Chlorella has been reported to cause photosensitization. In five case reports, patients who had ingested chlorella exhibited swelling followed by erythematopurpuric lesions on sun-exposed areas of the body. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs may exacerbate effects.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, chlorella might reduce the clinical effects of warfarin.
Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K. There is at least one case report of warfarin therapy becoming sub-therapeutic after initiation of chlorella supplements.
