HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Chlorella Cracked Cell Walls by Herb Stop
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chlorella, a freshwater algae. Chlorella is sold as a whole-food supplement and comes in a capsule with inactive ingredients (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose and purified water) that help form and fill the capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Chlorella is possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency — that's the only use in our data with a favorable rating. For brain tumors, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, depression, and fatigue, the evidence isn't established well enough for us to rate it.
If you're considering chlorella for one of those conditions, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the research supports it for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated in the short term, but product quality and purity vary widely — something to keep in mind when you're choosing a brand. The most common side effects are allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, photosensitivity, and stool discoloration.
Most of these tend to happen in the first two weeks. Rarely, serious allergic reactions including anaphylaxis have been reported.
Safety hasn't been fully established, so avoid chlorella unless your doctor approves it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before taking this product if you're on warfarin (a blood thinner) — chlorella contains vitamin K, which can make warfarin less effective. Also double-check if you're taking any photosensitizing drugs (medications that make your skin more sensitive to sun).
These two drug types carry Moderate severity interactions with chlorella.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella may be worth considering if you're pregnant and iron deficient and your doctor recommends it. If you take warfarin or photosensitizing drugs, you'll need to check with your pharmacist first — this supplement can interfere with both.
Because long-term safety data is limited and product quality varies, it's a good idea to run your medications through our checker and talk with your pharmacist before starting.
