What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: chlorella, a single-celled green algae. That's it — no fillers or other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for chlorella is mixed. It's possibly effective for pregnancy-related iron deficiency.
For other uses — brain tumors, fatty liver disease, depression, and fatigue — there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works. The data we hold doesn't establish effectiveness for those conditions.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Chlorella is generally well tolerated in the short term, though product quality and purity vary widely between suppliers — that's something to keep in mind. The most common side effects are allergic reactions, abdominal cramping, constipation or diarrhea, fatigue, gas, nausea, sun sensitivity, and stool discoloration.
These tend to show up in the first two weeks. Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, are rare but have been reported.
There isn't enough safety data on long-term use, so the product labeling advises against it unless your doctor approves.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before starting if you take warfarin or any blood thinner — chlorella can reduce its effectiveness. Also double-check any medications that make your skin sun-sensitive, since chlorella may add to that effect.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Chlorella may help with pregnancy-related iron deficiency, but the evidence for other uses isn't clear yet. If you take warfarin or any photosensitizing medications, talk with us before starting.
Short-term side effects like cramping and nausea are usually mild, but make sure your doctor is on board with this supplement.

Chlorella monograph & interactionsChlorella Powder 3 g by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Chlorella Powder by BulkSupplements.com has documented interactions with medications, chiefly blood thinners and drugs that make your skin more sun-sensitive.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The most serious concern is warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner. Chlorella contains significant amounts of vitamin K, which can reduce how well warfarin works.
There's at least one case report where someone's warfarin therapy stopped working properly after they started taking chlorella. If you take warfarin, you'll need to talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting this.
Chlorella may also have additive effects with photosensitizing drugs — medications that make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Chlorella itself has been linked to photosensitization in case reports, so combining it with drugs that do the same could increase that risk.
Altogether, these interactions span 336 individual medications. Before you start chlorella, run your exact prescriptions through the checker on this page.
