CholestePure contains 6 active ingredients, all plant sterols (phytosterols): betasitosterol, sitosterol, and a phytosterol complex made up of campesterol, stigmasterol, and brassicasterol, plus total phytosterols. These are compounds derived from plants that resemble cholesterol in structure and may help your body manage cholesterol levels and prostate health.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — cellulose, water, ascorbyl palmitate, and plant fiber — that are there to hold the formula together and protect it.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Beta-sitosterol and sitosterol (the plant sterols in this product) have the strongest evidence for benign prostatic hyperplasia, or enlarged prostate (BPH) — they're rated likely effective for that condition. For high cholesterol in familial hypercholesterolemia and coronary heart disease, they're rated possibly effective.
The other plant sterols in the product — campesterol, stigmasterol, and brassicasterol — are part of the phytosterol complex but don't have separate effectiveness data on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Beta-sitosterol and sitosterol are generally well tolerated when used short-term. The most common side effects are constipation, diarrhea, gas, indigestion, and nausea.
A small number of people have reported worsening acne or loss of appetite. One case report described acute inflammation of the pancreas in someone taking beta-sitosterol, though symptoms stopped when he quit.
There isn't enough safety data to recommend these plant sterols during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing before you start this product.
