Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: choline (as choline bitartrate). Choline is a nutrient your body uses to support cell membranes, brain function, and the nervous system.

The capsule itself contains hypromellose and water as inactive ingredients.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Choline's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Brain and memory support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, Cognitive function, Dementia, Infant development.
  • The closest evidence on file: Choline is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Age-related cognitive decline (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Choline is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Alzheimer disease, Cognitive function, Dementia, Infant development.

The evidence for choline's effectiveness varies by use. For athletic performance, the data suggests it's probably not effective.

For Alzheimer's disease, age-related cognitive decline, bronchitis, TPN-associated liver fat, and hay fever, we don't have enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works or not.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Choline is well tolerated at normal doses. At high doses above the daily upper limit of 3.5 grams, side effects can occur — the most common being a fishy body odor.

At doses of 9 grams daily or higher, you may experience diarrhea, nausea, excess saliva, sweating, and vomiting. Choline is rated as likely safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, though your doctor should guide your dose — your needs are higher while breastfeeding, and if you're pregnant, prenatal vitamins or supplement doses should be used only as your doctor advises.

Known Interaction Concern · database check
Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Choline.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • For scale: 16 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take atropine — a medication used for eye conditions, muscle problems, or other medical reasons — check with your pharmacist before starting this product, as choline may reduce atropine's effects. No other interactions are documented in our data for the ingredients we could check.

Atropine

Theoretically, choline might decrease the effects of atropine in the brain.
Animal research shows that administering choline one hour before administering atropine can attenuate atropine-induced decreases in brain levels of acetylcholine. Theoretically, concomitant use of choline and atropine may decrease the effects of atropine.

Choline Bitartrate by NutraBio: Common Questions

Does Choline Bitartrate by NutraBio interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Choline Bitartrate has a known interaction with 16 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Choline Bitartrate contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is it safe to take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Choline is rated as likely safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. That said, your needs are higher while breastfeeding, and if you're pregnant, dosing should be guided by your doctor. Use prenatal vitamins or supplement doses only as your doctor advises.
What's the fishy smell I might notice?
At high doses, choline can cause a fishy body odor. This happens because your gut bacteria break down choline into trimethylamine. It's not dangerous, but if it bothers you, your doctor or pharmacist can discuss whether a lower dose or a different form might work better.
How much choline is too much?
The daily upper limit is 3.5 grams. Above that, side effects become more likely. At 9 grams daily or higher, you risk diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, sweating, and excess salivation. Stick to the dose on the label unless your doctor says otherwise.
Does choline actually improve brain function or athletic performance?
For athletic performance, the evidence suggests it probably isn't effective. For brain conditions like Alzheimer's or age-related cognitive decline, we don't have enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works. Talk with your pharmacist about whether it's the right choice for your goals.
What's in the capsule besides choline?
The capsule itself contains hypromellose and water. These are inactive ingredients — fillers and binders that hold the product together. Choline is the only active ingredient.
