Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: chondroitin sulfate 250 mg per capsule. Chondroitin is a compound found naturally in cartilage that's used to support joint health and other body tissues.

The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, rice flour, vegetable magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide — which are binders, fillers, and capsule material.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: joint health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Osteoarthritis, Aromatase inhibitor-induced arthralgia, Kashin-Beck disease, Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), joint cartilage, joint pain — and 1 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Chondroitin Sulfate is rated "Possibly Effective" for Osteoarthritis (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Chondroitin Sulfate is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Temporomandibular disorders (TMD), Kashin-Beck disease, Aromatase inhibitor-induced arthralgia.

The evidence for chondroitin sulfate is mixed and depends on what you're using it for. It's rated possibly effective for cataracts and osteoarthritis (age-related wear on joints), meaning some evidence supports its use but more research is needed.

For aging skin, osteoporosis, high cholesterol, and colorectal polyp prevention, there isn't enough reliable evidence in our data to say whether it works.

  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chondroitin sulfate is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth short-term, though product quality and real-world benefit vary. The most common side effects are stomach upset — abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, and nausea.

Rare reports include liver damage and skin symptoms like swelling of the eyelids, lower leg swelling, hair loss, and rash. There's also a rare reported case of asthma flare-up with a glucosamine-chondroitin combination product.

There isn't enough safety information for pregnancy or breastfeeding — the data advises against use during both. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you in those situations.

Warfarin (Coumadin)

Taking chondroitin in combination with glucosamine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin. However, the effect of chondroitin alone is unclear.
There have been multiple reports of increased international normalized ratio (INR) in patients taking warfarin with glucosamine, with or without chondroitin. The lack of reports with chondroitin alone seem to suggest that the interactions occurring in these reports may have been due to glucosamine. In two individual case reports, glucosamine/chondroitin combinations were associated with a significant increase in INR in patients previously stabilized on warfarin. Additionally, 20 voluntary case reports to the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) have linked glucosamine plus chondroitin with increased INR, bruising, and bleeding in patients who were also taking warfarin. There have also been 20 additional case reports to the World Health Organization (WHO) that link glucosamine alone, without chondroitin, to increased INR in patients taking warfarin.
