Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product is pure chondroitin sulfate — a single active ingredient derived from cartilage. Chondroitin is a natural substance that makes up part of the connective tissue in your joints and may help maintain cartilage structure.

You're getting the powder form with no inactive ingredients listed.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed

This product doesn't appear to be marketed for a specific use, so we graded Chondroitin Sulfate's overall clinical evidence instead.

Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports Chondroitin Sulfate for:

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.
  • Since the label doesn't commit to one use, we graded the ingredient's overall clinical evidence instead.
  • On file: Cataracts — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).
  • On file: Osteoarthritis — rated "Possibly Effective" (Natural Medicines).

The evidence for chondroitin sulfate is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for cataracts and osteoarthritis, meaning there's some promising research but it's not definitive.

For aging skin, osteoporosis, high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia), and colorectal adenoma prevention, we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate how well it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chondroitin sulfate is generally well tolerated for short-term use, though quality can vary between products and long-term benefit is uncertain. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are stomach issues — abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, and nausea.

Skin symptoms like swelling around the eyes and eyelids, hair loss, and rash have been reported, especially in combination products with glucosamine. Rare serious effects include liver damage and asthma flare-ups, though these are uncommon.

There isn't enough safety information to use this during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Chondroitin Sulfate.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 2 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

If you take warfarin (Coumadin) or any other blood thinner, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product. Chondroitin combined with glucosamine has raised INR levels in patients on warfarin, and the effect of chondroitin alone isn't completely clear.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Chondroitin sulfate may help with osteoarthritis and cataracts, though the evidence isn't airtight. If you take warfarin or other blood thinners, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — the combination can affect how your blood clots.

Stomach upset is the most common side effect. Talk it over with your healthcare provider to see if it fits your situation.

Warfarin (Coumadin)

Taking chondroitin in combination with glucosamine might increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin. However, the effect of chondroitin alone is unclear.
There have been multiple reports of increased international normalized ratio (INR) in patients taking warfarin with glucosamine, with or without chondroitin. The lack of reports with chondroitin alone seem to suggest that the interactions occurring in these reports may have been due to glucosamine. In two individual case reports, glucosamine/chondroitin combinations were associated with a significant increase in INR in patients previously stabilized on warfarin. Additionally, 20 voluntary case reports to the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) have linked glucosamine plus chondroitin with increased INR, bruising, and bleeding in patients who were also taking warfarin. There have also been 20 additional case reports to the World Health Organization (WHO) that link glucosamine alone, without chondroitin, to increased INR in patients taking warfarin.

Chondroitin Sulfate by BulkSupplements.com: Common Questions

Does Chondroitin Sulfate by BulkSupplements.com interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Chondroitin Sulfate has a known interaction with 2 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Chondroitin Sulfate contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety information about chondroitin sulfate in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. The safety data advises against use in both situations. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your options — they can give you personalized advice based on your health.
What's the most common side effect?
Stomach issues are most common: bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, and abdominal pain. Most people tolerate it well, especially in the short term, but these digestive effects do happen.
Does chondroitin actually work for joint pain?
For osteoarthritis, the evidence is 'possibly effective' — there's some research backing it up, but it's not definitive. Results vary from person to person, and benefit is still uncertain overall.
Is this the same as glucosamine?
No, they're different. This product is pure chondroitin sulfate. Many people take them together, but this one has only chondroitin. They sometimes work better as a team for joint support, but that's a separate choice.
What is chondroitin sulfate?
It's a natural substance found in cartilage — the spongy tissue that cushions your joints. The theory is that taking it by mouth helps your body maintain cartilage and keep joints moving smoothly.
