The capsules also contain inactive ingredients (gelatin, microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, and magnesium stearate) that serve as the capsule shell and binding agents.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for bovine colostrum is mixed and modest. It's rated possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related diarrhea, rotaviral diarrhea, and exercise-induced respiratory infections.
For necrotizing enterocolitis (a serious condition in premature infants), it's rated possibly ineffective. The data we hold does not establish strong proof for any of these uses — the ratings reflect early or limited evidence.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Bovine colostrum is generally well tolerated in most adults. However, if you have a milk or dairy allergy, you should avoid it.
In clinical trials, a small number of patients reported mild bloating, nausea, diarrhea, and unsettled stomach at rates similar to those in a whey-based control group. In people with HIV-related infections, it has occasionally caused nausea and vomiting, elevated liver function tests, and decreased red blood cell counts.
There isn't enough reliable safety data during pregnancy to recommend use without your doctor's approval, and safety during breastfeeding is not well studied — talk with your provider about whether it's right for you.
