HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Dandelion 1040 mg by Solaray
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: dandelion at 1,040 mg per capsule. The capsule also holds inactive ingredients — cellulose (a plant fiber), magnesium stearate (a binder), and rice extract blend — to keep the supplement stable and deliver the dose.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence on dandelion for joint pain, throat inflammation (tonsillitis), swelling after surgery, and postoperative pain is insufficient — meaning we don't have enough reliable data to know whether it works for these uses. The facts we hold don't establish its effectiveness for any condition.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Dandelion is generally well tolerated when taken as food, though supplement-strength doses are less studied. The most common side effects reported orally are diarrhea, heartburn, and stomach discomfort.
A small number of sensitive individuals have had allergic reactions, including rare cases of anaphylaxis, and some people develop dermatitis (skin irritation) when the herb touches their skin. Because dandelion belongs to the ragweed family (Asteraceae), anyone with a known allergy to ragweed, daisies, chrysanthemums, or related plants should be cautious.
There isn't enough reliable information on safety while breastfeeding, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using this supplement if you're nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this dandelion supplement, double-check with your pharmacist if you take any of these: blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin or aspirin; diabetes medications; potassium-sparing diuretics (water pills that keep potassium in your body); lithium; fluoroquinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin; or drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 enzymes or glucuronidation pathways.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Dandelion supplement may be worth asking about if you're exploring herbal options, but it comes with several moderate drug interactions — especially if you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, lithium, or potassium-sparing diuretics. If you're allergic to ragweed or related plants, or if you're breastfeeding, check with your pharmacist first.
Run your current medications through the interaction checker before starting.

Dandelion 1040 mg by Solaray Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Solaray Dandelion 1040 mg contains one active ingredient — dandelion — which interacts with a number of medication types.
The most serious documented concerns are moderate-severity interactions affecting how your liver processes certain drugs and your potassium levels.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Dandelion may slow how your body clears drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 (a liver enzyme), which could raise their levels in your bloodstream; this hasn't been reported in humans yet, but it's worth watching for. It also contains significant potassium, so if you take potassium-sparing diuretics (water pills that hold onto potassium), combining them with dandelion could push your potassium too high.
Additionally, dandelion may increase bleeding risk if you're on blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs like aspirin, and it might lower your blood sugar too much if you take diabetes medications. Dandelion may speed up how your body clears some glucuronidated drugs (a second type of liver processing), potentially making them less effective.
Other moderate-severity concerns include lithium — dandelion's diuretic effect could raise lithium levels — and fluoroquinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin, which animal studies suggest dandelion may reduce in the bloodstream. Altogether, these interactions span 455 individual medications.
Use the medication checker on this page to see if any of yours are affected before you start.

For each ingredient in Dandelion 1040 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Dandelion
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, taking dandelion root along with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
In vitro research suggests that dandelion root inhibits platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the risk for hypoglycemia when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that dandelion extract may have moderate alpha-glucosidase inhibitor activity and might also increase insulin secretion. Also, in a case report, a 58-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes who was being treated with insulin developed hypoglycemia 2 weeks after beginning to eat salads containing dandelion.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, dandelion might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Laboratory research suggests that dandelion might inhibit CYP1A2. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, until more is known, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 in patients taking dandelion.
Glucuronidated Drugs
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the clearance of drugs that are UDP-glucuronosyltransferase substrates.
There is some preliminary evidence that dandelion might induce UDP-glucuronosyltransferase, a phase II enzyme.
Lithium
Theoretically, through diuretic effects, dandelion might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Animal research suggests that dandelion has diuretic properties. As diuretics can increase serum lithium levels, the dose of lithium might need to be decreased when taken with dandelion.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the risk of hyperkalemia when taken with potassium-sparing diuretics.
Dandelion contains significant amounts of potassium.
Quinolone Antibiotics
Theoretically, dandelion might lower fluoroquinolone levels.
Animal research shows that dandelion reduces absorption of ciprofloxacin and can lower levels by 73%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.
