HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Dandelion Root 500 mg by NutraBio
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: dandelion root extract at 500 mg per capsule. The capsule itself is made from vegetable cellulose, which is an inactive ingredient.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold doesn't establish that dandelion root works for joint pain, tonsillitis, postoperative swelling, or postoperative pain—the data shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for any of these uses. If you're considering this supplement for a specific condition, your pharmacist or doctor can help you weigh what's known.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Dandelion root is generally well tolerated when used as a food, but supplement-strength doses are less studied. The most common side effects reported are diarrhea, heartburn, and stomach discomfort.
A small number of sensitive individuals may experience allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, allergic rhinitis, or contact dermatitis—especially if you're sensitive to the ragweed family (Asteraceae), which includes chrysanthemums, marigolds, and daisies. The safety data on this supplement while breastfeeding is limited, so caution is advised if you're nursing; there isn't enough information on file about use during pregnancy either.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a known allergy to ragweed or related plants.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (warfarin, aspirin), diabetes medications, potassium-sparing diuretics, lithium, fluoroquinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin, or any drugs metabolized by the CYP1A2 enzyme. All of these have documented Moderate-severity interaction concerns with dandelion root.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Dandelion root may be worth considering if you're looking for a traditionally used herb, but it comes with real interaction concerns—especially if you take blood thinners, diabetes drugs, lithium, potassium-sparing water pills, or certain antibiotics. Check your medications with the tool on this page, and talk with your pharmacist before you start, particularly if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or allergic to ragweed-family plants.

Dandelion Root 500 mg by NutraBio Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Dandelion Root by NutraBio has documented interactions with several medication types, all rated Moderate severity.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin and aspirin): dandelion root may inhibit platelet clumping, which could increase your risk of bruising and bleeding when combined with these medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You'll also want to check before combining this with diabetes medications, since lab research suggests dandelion might lower blood sugar and increase insulin release—creating a risk for low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Dandelion contains significant potassium, so it may raise potassium levels if you're on potassium-sparing water pills (diuretics).
It may also interact with lithium by reducing how your body clears it, potentially raising lithium levels. Additionally, preliminary evidence suggests dandelion might speed up how your liver processes certain glucuronidated drugs, and it may lower levels of fluoroquinolone antibiotics like ciprofloxacin.
One more: lab research hints dandelion might affect how your body metabolizes drugs broken down by the CYP1A2 enzyme, though this hasn't been seen in humans yet. Altogether, these interactions span 455 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Dandelion Root 500 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Dandelion Root Extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, taking dandelion root along with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
In vitro research suggests that dandelion root inhibits platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the risk for hypoglycemia when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that dandelion extract may have moderate alpha-glucosidase inhibitor activity and might also increase insulin secretion. Also, in a case report, a 58-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes who was being treated with insulin developed hypoglycemia 2 weeks after beginning to eat salads containing dandelion.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, dandelion might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Laboratory research suggests that dandelion might inhibit CYP1A2. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, until more is known, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 in patients taking dandelion.
Glucuronidated Drugs
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the clearance of drugs that are UDP-glucuronosyltransferase substrates.
There is some preliminary evidence that dandelion might induce UDP-glucuronosyltransferase, a phase II enzyme.
Lithium
Theoretically, through diuretic effects, dandelion might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Animal research suggests that dandelion has diuretic properties. As diuretics can increase serum lithium levels, the dose of lithium might need to be decreased when taken with dandelion.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the risk of hyperkalemia when taken with potassium-sparing diuretics.
Dandelion contains significant amounts of potassium.
Quinolone Antibiotics
Theoretically, dandelion might lower fluoroquinolone levels.
Animal research shows that dandelion reduces absorption of ciprofloxacin and can lower levels by 73%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.
