HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Dandelion Extract by Herbadiet
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: dandelion root extract. It's made from the root of the dandelion plant, which has been used traditionally for various purposes.
The capsule itself contains no other active ingredients, though you may find inactive ingredients like capsule materials depending on the formulation.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for dandelion extract isn't established in the data we hold. The product facts note insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for joint pain, tonsillitis, postoperative swelling, and postoperative pain—the conditions covered in our monograph.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work, just that solid research backing those uses isn't available yet.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Dandelion is generally well tolerated as a food, but supplement-strength doses are less studied. The most common side effects reported when taken by mouth are diarrhea, heartburn, and stomach discomfort.
Rarely, allergic reactions—including serious ones like anaphylaxis—can occur, especially in people sensitive to plants in the daisy family (like ragweed, daisies, and marigolds). If applied to skin, dandelion can cause contact dermatitis in sensitive people.
There isn't enough reliable information on safety while breastfeeding, so caution is advised and you should talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Herbadiet's Dandelion Extract, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs), diabetes medications, potassium-sparing diuretics, lithium, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, or any drugs metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP1A2 or through glucuronidation. Lab research suggests dandelion may affect how your body processes or responds to these drugs, though human data is limited.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Dandelion extract is a single-ingredient supplement generally well tolerated as food, but it interacts with blood thinners, diabetes drugs, lithium, several other medication types, and has limited study at supplement doses. If you're on any prescription medications—especially blood thinners or diabetes drugs—check your exact list with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Those with allergies to ragweed or daisy-family plants should be cautious.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbadiet's Dandelion Extract, a single-ingredient product containing dandelion root extract, has documented interactions with seven medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners (anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs)—dandelion may increase your risk of bruising and bleeding because lab research suggests it can slow blood clotting.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Dandelion also interacts with several other drug categories. It may raise levels of certain medications broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2, potentially causing side effects from drug buildup.
It can increase potassium levels dangerously if you're on potassium-sparing water pills (diuretics), and it may lower blood sugar too much when combined with diabetes medications. Additionally, dandelion may speed up the clearance of certain drugs metabolized through glucuronidation, making them less effective, and it could reduce absorption of fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
Finally, dandelion's diuretic properties might raise lithium levels, which could require a dose adjustment.
Almost all of these are theoretical findings from lab studies, not yet confirmed in people—but that's why they're important to check before you start. Altogether, these interactions span 457 individual medications.
Use the interaction checker below to see if any of your prescriptions are affected.

For each ingredient in Dandelion Extract with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Dandelion root extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, taking dandelion root along with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
In vitro research suggests that dandelion root inhibits platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the risk for hypoglycemia when used with antidiabetes drugs.
Laboratory research suggests that dandelion extract may have moderate alpha-glucosidase inhibitor activity and might also increase insulin secretion. Also, in a case report, a 58-year-old woman with type 2 diabetes who was being treated with insulin developed hypoglycemia 2 weeks after beginning to eat salads containing dandelion.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, dandelion might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Laboratory research suggests that dandelion might inhibit CYP1A2. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. However, until more is known, watch for an increase in the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 in patients taking dandelion.
Glucuronidated Drugs
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the clearance of drugs that are UDP-glucuronosyltransferase substrates.
There is some preliminary evidence that dandelion might induce UDP-glucuronosyltransferase, a phase II enzyme.
Lithium
Theoretically, through diuretic effects, dandelion might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Animal research suggests that dandelion has diuretic properties. As diuretics can increase serum lithium levels, the dose of lithium might need to be decreased when taken with dandelion.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Theoretically, dandelion might increase the risk of hyperkalemia when taken with potassium-sparing diuretics.
Dandelion contains significant amounts of potassium.
Quinolone Antibiotics
Theoretically, dandelion might lower fluoroquinolone levels.
Animal research shows that dandelion reduces absorption of ciprofloxacin and can lower levels by 73%. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.
