Formula 22 Digest Chewables contains 14 active digestive enzymes designed to break down different types of food. Protease breaks down proteins, lipase handles fats, lactase breaks down milk sugar (lactose), and phytase helps your body use minerals from plant foods.

The evidence on these enzymes is mixed and limited. Lactase is effective for lactose intolerance.

How safe is it?

Protease, lipase, lactase, and phytase are generally well tolerated by most adults at typical doses. Rare cases of allergic reactions to protease and phytase have been reported, mostly in workers exposed to powdered forms in industrial settings; one case of lactase-induced allergic rhinoconjunctivitis in a worker has been documented.
If you have a serious digestive condition, talk with your doctor before starting this product. During pregnancy, protease should be avoided unless prescribed, lipase and phytase are not well studied so check with your doctor first, and lactase is likely safe.
During breastfeeding, protease and phytase are not well studied — ask your doctor — while lipase has limited data and lactase likely poses low risk, but all three warrant a conversation with your healthcare provider.
