Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: lutein 20 mg per capsule. Lutein is a carotenoid found in leafy greens and other plants; your body stores it in the eye, where it may help filter harmful light.

The capsule also holds inactive ingredients — cellulose, stearic acid, beet powder, and ascorbyl palmitate — which are fillers and binders.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: lutein for eye health and macular support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), Asthenopia (eye strain), Cataracts, Central serous retinopathy, Diabetic retinopathy, Dry eye — and 4 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lutein is rated "Possibly Effective" for Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lutein is rated "Possibly Effective" for Cataracts.
  • Also on file: Lutein is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Retinitis pigmentosa.

Lutein is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts, according to the evidence we have. For other conditions — retinitis pigmentosa, retinopathy of prematurity, necrotizing enterocolitis, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia — the evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective.

The research on lutein for eye health is ongoing, so talk with your eye doctor about whether it fits your needs.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lutein at 20 mg daily — the dose in this product — is generally well tolerated with no adverse effects reported in trials. The caution here is that most safety data comes from dietary sources and lower supplement doses; higher supplement doses haven't been as thoroughly studied.

Lutein is naturally present in breast milk, but safety of higher supplement doses during breastfeeding isn't well established, so check with your doctor if you're nursing. For pregnancy, the data rates lutein as likely safe.

General Statements

Lutein is an orange-red carotenoid pigment produced by plants and is present in the diet in colorful fruits and vegetables. In the body, Lutein is one of the predominant pigments concentrated in the macula, a specialized area of the eye that is responsible for central vision. In addition, it is known to be deposited in the skin. Lutein's functional role in these vulnerable tissues is to protect against sunlight-induced free radical production.

Double Strength Luteiin 20 mg by NOW: Common Questions

Does Double Strength Luteiin 20 mg by NOW interact with any medications?
We do not currently list a known interaction for the mapped ingredients in Double Strength Luteiin 20 mg. This does not guarantee none exist, so confirm with your pharmacist.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Double Strength Luteiin 20 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will lutein help prevent cataracts or macular degeneration?
Lutein is possibly effective for both. The evidence isn't definitive yet, so it's not a guarantee — but the research supports that it may help. Talk to your eye doctor about whether it fits into your eye health plan.
Is 20 mg a safe daily dose?
Yes. Doses up to 20 mg daily have not caused adverse effects in trials, and this dose is generally well tolerated. Lutein from food is straightforward, but since supplement doses haven't been studied as extensively, check with your doctor if you have any health concerns.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Lutein is rated likely safe in pregnancy. During breastfeeding, lutein naturally appears in breast milk, but safety of higher supplement doses isn't well studied — talk with your doctor before taking it if you're nursing.
What are the inactive ingredients?
The capsule contains cellulose, stearic acid, beet powder, and ascorbyl palmitate — all fillers and binders to hold the lutein together.
Does lutein interact with my medications?
No interactions are documented for lutein in our data. Still, check the interaction tool on this page with your specific medications, or ask your pharmacist to be certain.
