What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: pumpkin seed extract in a 4:1 concentrated powder form. There are no other inactive ingredients listed.
Pumpkin seed has traditionally been used to support urinary and prostate health, and a small amount of research backs its use for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that can cause urinary symptoms in older men.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for pumpkin seed is mixed. It's possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), meaning some research suggests it may help with urinary symptoms related to prostate enlargement.
However, for androgenic alopecia (male- or female-pattern hair loss), interstitial cystitis (bladder pain), intestinal parasites, and urinary tract infections, the evidence is insufficient to rate whether it works. We simply don't have reliable data to say yes or no.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Pumpkin seed is generally well tolerated when used as a food or supplement in adults. The most common side effects—when they do occur—are mild gastrointestinal: abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.
There are two rare case reports of significant temporary hair loss within 1–3 weeks of consuming bitter-tasting pumpkin or squash with high levels of cucurbitacin (a compound found mainly in wild varieties); this is not a typical risk with commercial pumpkin seed products. Anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) is rare but has been reported.
During pregnancy, there isn't enough data on concentrated pumpkin seed supplements to know whether they're safe; plain pumpkin as a food is fine, but talk with your doctor before taking a concentrated supplement. The same applies to breastfeeding—safety data on concentrated supplements is limited, so your doctor or pharmacist can help you decide whether it's right for you.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take lithium, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this product—pumpkin seed extract may increase lithium levels in your bloodstream and require a dose adjustment. No other medication interactions are documented in our data for this ingredient.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Pumpkin seed extract may be worth considering if you're exploring options for benign prostatic hyperplasia symptoms and your doctor is on board. If you take lithium, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist first—this product may affect how your body handles it.
For other conditions (hair loss, bladder pain, parasites, or UTIs), the evidence isn't there yet to say whether it helps.
