Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: prostate and urinary tract health support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), Overactive bladder, urinary frequency, urinary urgency.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Pumpkin is rated "Possibly Effective" for Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Pumpkin is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Overactive bladder.

The evidence for pumpkin seed extract is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate gland becomes enlarged.

For androgenic alopecia (male or female pattern hair loss), interstitial cystitis (bladder pain), intestinal parasites, and urinary tract infections, the evidence isn't strong enough yet to rate its effectiveness — we just don't have enough reliable data.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Pumpkin as a food is generally well tolerated. Concentrated seed-oil supplements are also generally well tolerated by most adults, though the concentrated form hasn't been as thoroughly studied as whole pumpkin.

The most common side effects are mild — abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting — though very rarely, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) has been reported. There are two case reports of hair loss occurring 1–3 weeks after eating bitter-tasting pumpkin or squash, attributed to high levels of a compound called cucurbitacin found in wild varieties; this is rare.

For pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough data on concentrated pumpkin seed supplements to know whether they're safe, even though pumpkin as a food is fine. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice before using this product during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Extra Strength Pumpkin Seed 450 mg 4:1 Extract by TerraVita Premium Collection: Common Questions

Does Extra Strength Pumpkin Seed 450 mg 4:1 Extract by TerraVita Premium Collection interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Extra Strength Pumpkin Seed 450 mg 4:1 Extract has a known interaction with 1 medication. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Extra Strength Pumpkin Seed 450 mg 4:1 Extract contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will this help my enlarged prostate?
It's possibly effective for benign prostatic hyperplasia, which means there's some evidence, but it's not definitive yet. Whether it'll work for you is an individual question — your doctor can help you decide if it's worth trying alongside your current treatment.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough data on concentrated pumpkin seed supplements to know whether they're safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Pumpkin as a food is fine, but the concentrated extract hasn't been well studied. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
What side effects should I watch for?
Most people tolerate it well. The most common mild side effects are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. Very rarely, anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) has been reported. If you experience anything concerning, stop and talk to your pharmacist or doctor.
I take lithium for bipolar disorder. Is this safe?
No — not without checking first. Pumpkin seed extract may reduce how your body clears lithium, raising the level in your blood. Your lithium dose might need to be lowered. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this product.
What's the 4:1 extract mean?
It means the pumpkin seed material has been concentrated — four parts of raw pumpkin seed were reduced to one part of extract. That's why each capsule delivers a stronger dose than you'd get from the same amount of whole pumpkin seed.
