Fennel Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Fennel against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product is pure fennel powder — that's the single active ingredient. Fennel is a seed from a Mediterranean plant that's been used in cooking and traditional medicine for centuries.
The powder form means you're getting the concentrated plant material without added fillers or binders.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Fennel is possibly effective for period pain (dysmenorrhea). For other uses — bronchitis, anxiety, bedwetting, and cholera — we don't have enough reliable evidence yet to know whether it works.
If you're considering fennel for one of those other conditions, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the evidence actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
As a food, fennel is generally well tolerated. But this is a concentrated supplement powder, not just seasoning, so it deserves more caution.
The most common side effects from fennel are stomach upset, sun sensitivity, and allergic reactions in people who are sensitive — though those are uncommon. In rare cases, seizures have been reported.
Some people may have stronger allergic reactions, including wheezing and trouble breathing. The safety facts we have advise against medicinal or concentrated amounts during pregnancy because of limited data and fennel's hormone-like effects.
If you're breastfeeding, food amounts of fennel are likely okay, but medicinal doses and fennel essential oil haven't been well studied, so talk with your pharmacist or doctor for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking fennel, double-check these with your pharmacist: birth control pills and other contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, blood thinners (anticoagulants) and antiplatelet drugs like aspirin, the antibiotic ciprofloxacin, and tamoxifen for breast cancer. Fennel may make all of these less effective or increase side effects.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Fennel powder might help with period pain if the evidence applies to you. But because it interacts with birth control, hormone therapy, blood thinners, antibiotics, and cancer medications, you need to check your exact drugs before starting.
If you're pregnant, concentrated amounts aren't advised. Run your medications through the tool on this page.

Fennel by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Fennel by BulkSupplements.com does interact with several medication types, and most of those interactions are Moderate in severity.
The biggest concern is with contraceptive drugs — fennel contains compounds with estrogen-like activity, and in large amounts it may compete for estrogen receptors and reduce how well your birth control works.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Fennel may also raise levels of drugs broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, though this hasn't been proven in humans yet — only in lab studies. It could theoretically interfere with hormone replacement therapy in the same way it affects contraceptives.
Additionally, because fennel has mild blood-thinning properties, it may increase bleeding risk if you're taking anticoagulants (blood thinners) or antiplatelet drugs like aspirin. Fennel may also reduce how well ciprofloxacin (an antibiotic) and tamoxifen (a breast cancer medication) work.
Altogether, these interactions span 730 individual medications. Before you start fennel, run your exact medications through the checker on this page.

Fennel
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, fennel might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
Animal research suggests that fennel oil has antithrombotic and antiplatelet effects.
Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
Theoretically, fennel might decrease the levels and clinical effects of ciprofloxacin.
Animal research shows that fennel reduces ciprofloxacin bioavailability by nearly 50%, possibly due to the metal cations such as calcium, iron, and magnesium contained in fennel. This study also found that fennel increased tissue distribution and slowed elimination of ciprofloxacin.
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might decrease the effects of contraceptive drugs due to competition for estrogen receptors.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, fennel might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research suggests that fennel inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Estrogens
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might interfere with hormone replacement therapy due to competition for estrogen receptors.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity.
Tamoxifen (Nolvadex)
Theoretically, taking large amounts of fennel might decrease the antiestrogenic effect of tamoxifen.
Some constituents of fennel have estrogenic activity, which may interfere with the antiestrogenic activity of tamoxifen.
